«I want to be rich and I’m not sorry» says Jen Sincero, bestselling author of the You Are A Badass book. With millions of copies sold, the uninhibited manifesto on how to change your life and take control of who you really are gives advice, anecdotes and exercises for you to become a badass. It’s this month’s pick of our Speed-Read series and here’s why:
Jen’s book almost never got published as she explains in an interview with The Guardian: “Everybody said that I wasn’t saying anything new”. But deep down, Jen knew that it was worth the shot: “I knew I was saying it in a new way”. A new way it is: uncanny, sometimes sassy, not afraid to swear, the book gets rid of the old-fashioned prose common to most development books.
Jen starts off by focusing on who ‘we’ are by explaining the impact of our subconscious on the decisions we make and how our ‘ego’ impeaches us to step out of our comfort zones. She calls ego “the big snooze” as it “will do everything it can to stop you from changing and growing, especially since you’re attempting to obliterate the very identity that you and everyone else has come to know as ‘you’.”
The author then goes on about the importance of loving yourself and gives her tips on how to achieve it:
- Appreciate how special you are
- Drown yourself in affirmations
- Do things you love
- Ditch the self-deprecating humour
- Let the love in
- Don’t compare yourself to others
- Forgive yourself!
Loving yourself sure is very important but it’s useless if you don’t let go of what other people think of you. Jen emphasizes the importance of staying true to yourself because “you cannot control what people think or do, the only thing you can control is what YOU say and do. People’s opinions of you say more about them than it does you.”
While every BA has a different path and goal, we all aspire to the same thing: Happiness.
Jen Sincero provides her steps to reaching it and we have taken it one step further and applied that to being a Badass Brand Ambassador:
The American author goes on with ideas on how to take these steps even further: through meditation, changing the way you think, having gratitude or learning to forgive. She explains that the biggest thing holding us back is our own BS: “We put so much energy into coming up with excuses why we can’t be, do, or have the things we want, and designing the perfect distractions to keep us from our dreams—imagine how far we’d get if we just shut up and used all that energy to go for it instead?”
Finally, she tells us to get out there and KICK ASS! In order to become a real Badass you need to:
Jen says: “Keep moving through each new challenge instead of stagnating and settling. The muscle of kick-assery is like any other muscle—you have to use it or lose it”.
In the end it all comes down to you and what you want to achieve, and mostly allowing yourself to do so, as the final words of her book suggest: “Give yourself the permission and the means, to be who you are REGARDLESS OF WHAT ANYBODY ELSE THINKS OR BELIEVES IS POSSIBLE.”
We were blown away by this book and could immediately use so much of her advice to being a Brand Ambassador. Jump over to her Instagram @jensincero and keep this badass as one of your influences every day!
